happy 4th
so i dont know if there is a word for 'independance'in russian, i havent found it yet. but my family knows that its a holiday for americans. I have snatched up my padroochas (friends) and we are having a little dinner at my home today. Much of the peace corp group has gone to a lake / resivor today. WE are totally sick of doing the group thing so we bagged it. plus you cant drink if peace corp supplys the transportation. Most, of the kids in our group of 42 are in the range of 22-24 males. you can see how that may get old quick.
Yesterday my language group went to Almaty, the largest city in central asia. they have all the modern accomidations, but if you dont know russian, or a little culture of kazakhstan...it could be quite frightening. Now that im use to it, it was very refreshing... we cant stop talking about the great toilets in the city!
went to republic square, green bazaar, some big park (that we cant remember the name of, its russian), russian orthodox church, a mosque(well poked my head in, my head wasent covered...along with my arms, legs...eyeballs...etc), went to this pseudo mcdonalds...very funny and very interesting take on a cheesebuger. BUT EXCELLENT BATHROOM!!! you may be seeing a trend here.

Privet Jenn,
Just lost my last message to you. Wow, what a great idea with this journal site. Will you be teaching your students how to create web pages?? They are lucky to have you. Remember the most important thing you teach is actually what you don't teach...the how of it all, you know. Think about that one and we can chat about that over a bottle of wine after this experience. Speaking of which, how was your wine dinner? Always good to break from the group, step off the tracks and see what you find. Isn't it amazing what modern conveniences we've come to expect and isn't it amazing as well with all of it how we still so seldom get it, TIME...time to connect with people. Enjoy your time with your host family and your new found friends. Hopefully, your life will slow a bit when you move out to the village...

ahhh, the luxury of time. I love having time, but sometimes I don't. I am presently up at the house, everyone here is very relaxe, almost too relaxed. it's a beautiful thing. I have finished one book and almost finished another, Feast of Love, an interesting book that i have chosen. I can't wait to hear more of your host family. We have decided to look for a Scrabble game in russian, but then decided that a travel scrabble just might have to do. Have you taught your students the alphabet? how to write their name? hopefully not to curse, even though they probably already know how to do that. It is cold up here for July 6th, 70 degrees. Mom is out "playing" with her flowers, dad went into town and was disappointed noone wanted to go with him, except Jara. I don't think he likes being alone. I will drive back tomorrow to NH for a game at 6:30. I have enjoyed the rides here and back much more than before, i actually think. Keep up with your journal, i will get a letter out to you by the end of the weekend with some mags and hopefully some music.
Take care, be safe, and I love you!
Linda
Hey Jen,
The word for Independence is (transliterated) nee-zah-vee-see-most if I remember correctly. Sounds like you're adapting quite well. I'm sure that some day soon you will start talking, and you will suddenly realize that you are not translating things in your head before you speak. It's a great moment.
Thought you might like to know that the ELCA chose your design (images with line drawings)to present to their board. They like you, they really like you!

TIMMMM-MAY!
Awh i miss you! i have had the opportunity to do the banya, but havent done the public one. most homes actually have a little banya which ive done a couple of times. the first time they suggested it i kinda freaked, envisioning the whole family together banya-ing. but its pretty sweet.
woah russian is hard, all the gender specific words, 6 cases....russians change EVERYTHING in grammer. im slowly getting better, we will have to keep up with conversation when i return.
thats great that they chose my design, it makes me feel all warm and squishy inside, hopefully i can get a copy for my portfolio.
well we is going.
